Lower Yough (Class III)

  • Columbus Paddling Club Columbus, Ohio 43202 USA (map)

Organizer: Mark Noltimier

If you paddle a hard boat, want to advance all those new boating skills you’ve just learned, or you just want to paddle, this two-day trip may be for you. The Lower Youghiogheny River in Southwestern Pennsylvania is a tributary of the Monongahela and at 2ft on the gage is mostly class III with a couple of class III+ rapids thrown in for fun. We normally stop below Swimmers rapid to eat lunch, relax or play on the flat spinning wave.

We’ll most likely stay at the Yough Stop, though this could change. (For first timers, I’ll provide directions closer to the trip date). Plan on bringing lunch for both days on the river. Breakfast and dinners will be eat in or eat out depending on your preference/budget. The weather in July is mostly warm but weather can be unpredictable and bring much cooler temperatures, so be prepared to layer for a variety of conditions. The Yough is dam fed so water temps will be in the low to mid 60s.
