CPC Social "Into the Arctic"

  • 5400 Nelsonia Place Columbus, OH, 43213 United States (map)

Join us for a Potluck Social and listen to Peter Dvoracek tell of his epic adventure "into the Arctic!" Please RSVP on our Evite: http://evite.me/GXY92GPDtV

Peter will recount his exciting experiences from his 2015 trip across the Canadian arctic, finishing in the Coronation gulf of the Arctic Ocean. A self-sustaining 8-person crew started in Yellowknife, NWT on Great Slave Lake, and covered over a thousand kilometers in 34 days; first paddling upstream, over a height of lands, and finally downstream to the ocean. Along the way, they found ways to overcome hypothermia, being stalked by arctic wolves, broken equipment, and a collapsing ice field that led to a medical evacuation. Despite these challenges, they found joy in traveling under the midnight sun, paddling alongside dancing caribou and schools of migrating trout and grayling, and paddling large whitewater in their canvas canoes. After a difficult ending, the local RCMP that helped with the evacuation welcomed them to Kugluktuk, NU, showing incredible hospitality and support as they gathered their things for the long flight and drove back to Minnesota and their families.

We will gather outside either around a campfire or on the sheltered porch at Julie Schmitt's home along the banks of the Big Walnut.  Peter will start his talk around 7:30pm.

Please bring a side dish or dessert to share.  Main dishes and drinks will be provided.

Kids are very welcome to join.  There is a short climbing wall to play around on, Big Walnut Creek to wade in, and room to run around so children are encouraged to come and burn off their youthful energy as well.

Hope to see you there!
